We have been investigating the pedagogical role and effectiveness of 3D virtual worlds such as Second Life4 in distance education.

Our JISC project, in collaboration with the University of Nottingham, investigated the design of learning spaces in 3D virtual worlds. The project is regularly showcased by JISC as a model 3D virtual world project.

A subsequent project (2010-2011) researched navigation and wayfinding in 3D virtual worlds and produced guidelines for design.  The guidelines have been adopted by JAMSTEC5, Texas Wesleyan University (US) and Vassar College (New York, US) to improve the designs of their islands in Second Life.
